Tunnel backing:
I started by making stripes on a 1cm x 1cm area. Taking the colours from reference video print screens. Then tiled them on a larger area. Resulting in the background i need.
This covers the whole area of the tunnel on my board.
Walls:
I started by taking the colours from a screen grab. Then i created a check pattern with the 2 colours in a 1cm x 1cm area. Again as above i created a larger area (much larger compared to the one above) and tiled it.
This covers the area on the board of the raised walls and more just to cover edges.
Grass:
Again i took the colours from a screen grab and created the grass the same way as the tunnel back ground. The tilled it to make enough to cover the area i need on the marble game.
This is not to any specific measurements as the grass is just on the top of the walls and no where else.
Main Background:
The main background for my piece was a lot more difficult to make compared to the other components. There were a few moments were i was completely stumped as to how to replicate the sonic background i was referencing.
I started with the area segmented into different layers and colours.
There are 2 water areas as it was a gradient in the reference, a wall / rocky area in the middle and a dark blue sky.
Next i added the gradient on the sea using the gradient tool then using a scatter brush i added specks of both the colours in the middle to represent reflections / waves in the sea.
Then using the same scatter brush but bigger i added white for the clouds and blurred them horizontally but only minimal.
Next i added the high light colour on the rocks as a line on the background. This is the first stage were i got stuck as i couldn't think of how to create the peaks and shadows on the rock. My solution to this was:
Go back and add peaks by hand in the original colour covering the high light colour. Next i was going to erase parts of the peaks so the high light colour would come through but after doing so it looked tacky and horrible.
Instead i went along added the highlights by hand in the areas i wanted. This was more time consuming but created a better finish. Next i added a slight Gaussian Blur to make it less sharp as it is meant to be far away and not to easy to see.
Lastly i shortened the height on the hill as the peaks made it look taller than i originally intended.
